it’s been almost a week since billy proposed and the apartment is delightfully adorned with congratulatory flowers, wine, cards and of course, wedding magazines from girlfriends far away. the nights of endless hours of pinning has begun and some initial phone calls to venues in areas we are thinking of have been placed.
it’s a happy, happy time. and i’m so happy to be starting this whole process with my best friend. i’ll admit, it’s maybe even more surreal for me being on the other end of things when i’m up to my eyeballs in the wedding industry myself 9 months out of the year. over the next 3 months, i will only be home in seattle for two weekends. and until november weekends are scarce as well. finding quality time together and even our own date is tricky when my priority is my JQP brides until the end of 2013. and you’re all asking, “who will photograph the big day?” well, i’ve already asked a few photographer friends i trust and value. because that’s what going to be most important to us. we aren’t eloping because having our nearest and dearest there to witness the day & help in making it happen is going to be the most important part. over the past few years, i’ve developed relationships with vendors i adore and worked with them to make so many other perfect days a reality. my hope is that i can surround our day with vendors that are friends and people we trust.
my florist friend offered her advice, “especially as a wedding professional getting married, the details become overwhelming and stressful! just close your eyes and picture your perfect day, then contact your favorite peers and they’ll make it all happen!” excellent advice.
i found some advice from a bridal guide yesterday and told billy, “re-evaluate your priorities as you plan. your guests will probably never notice some of the details you take great pains to carry out. instead, focus on the big picture.” i might stick that on the fridge.
it’s going to be so easy to get caught up in everything. but right now, as we start to plan our ceremony and think about the whole picture, we are determined to keep what’s important at the forefront of our minds. setting aside time daily to read “the meaning of marriage” by tim keller and journaling to my future husband is keeping me grounded and helping to keep the bigger picture in sight.
with to-do lists and phone calls and so many people involved and color palettes to consider, it’s the union of billy and i with the blessing of what it means to each other and hopefully what our marriage means to others that will be the foundation for our celebration planning.
Love that your choosing some of the vendors you’ve worked with. I love a personal wedding :) I got lucky and my mom did most of the decorating :) my best friend made my cake, another friend catered, a friend of my sisters photographed, another friend did my flowers. Pretty much everything was provided by my friends making it personal and cheap! Weddings can be stressful, always remember its about you and your best friend tying the knot!! :) have fun no matter what!!
Jordan, I love this!!! Now being married for 5 years, as fun as weddings are, all those little things we obsess over as brides don’t matter. I did NOT have my dream wedding, but when I think back on it now, I think of all the friends and family that pulled together to give us a wonderful wedding and how we were so completely surrounded by love. I love your vision of vendors who are friends.. ours ended up that way and I honestly think that is how weddings SHOULD be. That is how traditional weddings were.. I think it just completely puts the focus in the right place. So proud of what you have accomplished and so so so happy to see you happy and entering this exciting new chapter of life!
Advice from a mom of one of "your" brides… Your wedding day is a celebration of people about your marriage…. not the wedding. Focus on that and the day will be magical. Both our daughters had magical days… and did a wonderful job of focusing on the people who share their love. Barbara Wynn (Sarah Wynn McWhorter’s mom)
