it all started when my college sorority sister, shannon, emailed me back in the fall of 2014. “we are getting married in an exceptionally quaint and gorgeous mountain town in southern CO next summer and we have been looking for the right photographer. i have been super picky on this area of our wedding planning and I just can’t stop thinking about you and your work. your photos have such a unique and warm element to them and is exactly the type of photography I gravitate towards.” she had me at exceptionally quaint and gorgeous mountain town, of course. colorado?? sign me up. i couldn’t wait to email her back and start making plans. these are the type of weddings that make my heart flutter – homegrown, charming, unique…and at the feet of the rocky mountains :)
i remember driving through the mountains of colorado with some mixture of patty griffin and john denver playing through my car stereo. the sun was setting and a herd of mountain goats scaled a ridge right in front of my car. was this real life? i rounded the bend and the valley was laid out in front of me. westcliffe lay nestled at the base of the rockies and the scene was the kind of beautiful that instantly brings tears to your eyes. this was where i was going to spend the next 3 days and i could hardly believe it. i pulled to the side of the road, dumbfounded that my job had brought me to this place.
i can honestly say that the emotions and beauty from that weekend carried me through the entire editing process of this wedding. john denver’s “rocky mountain high” was set on repeat (the tune that becca walked down the aisle to) and i found myself smiling as i edited the simple but perfect details of shannon & becca’s day. they were married at the historic beckwith ranch and everywhere i looked, the place oozed with charm. some of my favorite details of the day included a bucket of beers at the back of the ceremony, inviting everyone to have a cold one before they sat down and making sure everyone felt right at home as soon as they arrived. i adored the handmade bouquets & bouts by becca’s mother. their family tree was such a unique place to display where they both came from. and their guestbook idea – signing names & messages inside their favorite books – was genius. to top it off, their dogbaby, zuri, was the ringbearer and i’ve never seen a cuter pup. with shannon & becca living in denver, colorado, it was only fitting that they would have such a cozy, folky, mountain wedding in westcliffe, colorado where they someday hope to have a cabin to vacation to in the summer.
